Community Water Quality Monitoring Program

 

 

The Gallatin River Task Force Community Water Quality Monitoring Program has collected routine watershed and aquatic insect data on the Upper Gallatin River and its tributaries for 16 years. The Upper Gallatin River flows north from the headwaters at Gallatin Lake in Yellowstone National Park to the Spanish Creek confluence, just before the river exits Gallatin Canyon. The Task Force collects physical, chemical, and biological water quality data at 16 sites. The goals of the program are to:

  1. To record baseline data to assess for trends and episodic events
  2. To assess the successes/failures of restoration projects on impaired streams
  3. To determine if road salt and sand from winter maintenance impacts water quality

The Task Force and volunteers measure: water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, turbidity, total dissolved solids, nitrate, total coliform, E. coli, aquatic insect, benthic algal biomass samples, streamflow, and sediment size distribution. In addition, we maintain four continuous monitoring stations on the West Fork of the Gallatin and three of its tributaries. For more information, review our Sampling Analysis Plan or Standard Operating Procedures.
