About
The Canyon area of Big Sky extends from Karst to around Cinnamon Lodge, including the area by the Gallatin River and upriver along its tributaries. It is a diverse and growing area of Big Sky.
Discussion about potential wastewater treatment upgrades is underway. An engineering feasibility study, hosted by the Gallatin River Task Force and funded by Resort Tax, is being conducted to help residents and landowners determine their best options. Information, public meeting records and the ability to join the email list are all available here. It is expected that this study will be completed in spring 2020.
The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology is conducting a groundwater investigation in the south canyon area over the next two years to assess the cumulative effects of existing and future residential and commercial development on water quality and quantity. An initial presentation and further information is available here.
Priorities
Priorities for Gallatin Canyon water stewardship are being set by interested participants. Infrastructure to address the wastewater and water supply needs for a growing community and sustain high quality water have been identified as important.
Canyon residents have proposed and engineering analysis that updates and expands upon analysis in the the 2008 Dowl HKM preliminary engineering report for wastewater options and exploring options for forming a Water and Sewer District. A septic maintenance program that could improve existing wastewater treatment and help safeguard groundwater supplies is also being discussed.
